[clue] musings about pclinuxos lxde

I had put away my System 76 netbook for a couple of months, because of
problems with the Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E wireless card. It wouldn't
work more than 10 feet distance from the wireless source.

(Full disclosure: System 76 had a driver solution for this from day
one IF YOU RUN UBUNTU.)

Since my preferred PCLinuxOS LXDE had aged too much for updates, i
reinstalled LXDE 2012.01, and, lo and behold, the wireless driver has
been updated. Now I get 100% link level anywhere in the house!

The latest LXDE is just great, with a few plusses and caveats caveats

1. The latest firefox 10.0.2 with the latest shockwave flash plugin

2. LibreOffice installation procedure (too big to be on the DVD). This
installs java and the java plugin for firefox as well.

3. cups is not installed. You need cups and foomatic-db iff you expect
to configure a printer.

4. The terminal (LXTerminal) is setup asd transparent by default. It
takes a little digging to find the option to turn this off.

5. There is no battery monitor, but the gnome battery monitor is easy
to install ans works great.

6. As noted in an earlier discussion (pclos kde), the update checker
runs at login, notifies you of updates and new packages, and remains
minimized on the panel with that same information. You can review and
apply the updates with synaptic, or as I do with command line: apt-get
update, apt-get dist-upgrade (on pclos NEVER EVER EVER use apt-get
upgrade!!! or things will break).

Sent from my now usefule System 76 netbook.

Enjoy,
